Upon release of her Alligator Records debut Turn The Heat Up in 1998 when she was only 18\, Copeland instantly became a blues and R&B force to be reckoned with. The New York Times and CNN\, among many others\, praised her talent\, larger-than-life personality\, dynamic authoritative voice\, and true star power. \nWith each subsequent release\, Copeland’s music continued to evolve. From her debut through 2005’s The Soul Truth\, Shemekia earned eight Blues Music Awards and a host of Living Blues Awards. 2000’s Wicked received the first of her five GRAMMY nominations. After two successful releases on Telarc\, including the GRAMMY-nominated 33 1/3\, Copeland returned to Alligator Records in 2015 with the GRAMMY-nominated\, Blues Music Award–winning Outskirts Of Love\, melding blues with more rootsy Americana sounds. \nWith 2018’s America’s Child\, Copeland brought out the first of her celebrated trilogy of albums concerning the state of the world\, sung from her perspective as a young Black woman and new mother. America’s Child was named the number one blues release of 2018 by MOJO magazine and won both the Blues Music Award and the Living Blues Award for Album of the Year. In addition to earning a GRAMMY Award nomination\, Copeland’s groundbreaking 2020 follow-up\, Uncivil War\, was named the 2020 Blues Album of the Year by DownBeat\, MOJO\, and Living Blues magazines. \n“She can do no wrong\,” said Rolling Stone. DESCRIPTION:SAN DIEGO — Celebrate the Fourth of July with an old-timey twist at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park (SHP) this year. Travel back in time to celebrate Independence Day as early San Diego residents did in the 1800s\, with free 19th-century games\, fun interactive activities\, live music\, and more. Old Town San Diego SHP\, with the support of the Boosters of Old Town\, is proud to offer this free event for adults\, and children of all ages. \nWHAT:       Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration\nWHEN:       Friday\, July 4\, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.\nWHERE:     Old Town San Diego SHP is located on San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street in San Diego\, next to the Old Town Transit Center\, with Coaster\, Trolley\, and \nMTS bus service. Free parking is available at the CalTransheadquarters\, just two blocks from the park at 2994 Sunset Street. \nThe event will kick off with a flag-raising ceremony presented by scouts from the San Diego Imperial Council\, followed by live music from Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters. Visitors can try their hand at classic 19th-century games such as wheelbarrow races\, tug of war\, and graces or get creative at hands-on art stations including pioneer dolls and bracelets spelling out their name in Morse code. Be sure to stick around for the 2nd annual watermelon eating competition (open to ages 8+) and the Community Quilt Raffle. \nThis celebration has become a beloved annual tradition for many families\, and allows visitors to immerse themselves in and appreciate early San Diego life.  \nFor more information about the Fourth of July celebration in Old Town San Diego SHP\, please visit or call the park’s visitor center at (619) 220-5422.   \nPlease Note: Dogs are allowed on leash in outdoor areas withinthe historic park\, but not inside museums or buildings.
