On the Hunt for Organic Salad in San Diego County

I love a good ORGANIC SALAD! And, I especially love it if I don’t have to prepare it!

Make it and take it!

Sometimes it can be a challenge to find one when I’m out, but I have locked down a few sure things in San Diego County which I share at the end of my post.

When I quit gluten and most grains several years ago, I became a frequent salad eater. And, my family members did too… by default.

A sandwich without bread is just a salad, right?

So, salad it is!

We became soup eaters too, but that is for a future post in the dead of our San Diego winter. You know, that brief period where it is really cold and you need to give your flip flops the week off. Looooooove soup, even without the cold weather!

And, green smoothies are not my thing. I would rather just enjoy a big robust colorful salad! Or a big bowl of veggie soup!

Soup is just cooked salad, right?

Bring on the veggies! Just not all whizzed together in a cold drink… for me.

You may love green smoothies and I think they are fine, just not for me.

I do like a green juice drink once in awhile. You know, one that the best thing you can say about it is that it only tastes a little bit bad, whether it be green or red or orange-ish brown. For health though, not a sweet fruit-heavy juice drink… with rum… I could sip all day…

Sorry, got distracted. ๐Ÿ™‚

Back to ORGANIC SALAD…

Everyone knows eating your veggies is super important for good health.  And, it makes perfect sense to me to choose organic to avoid the potential health issues resulting from ingesting all the pesticides on conventional produce.

Special Report: Pesticides in Produce

Organic food is one of those things I am willing to pay more for!  My health is worth it.  My family’s health is worth it. And, our farmers’ and farm workers’ health is worth it.

Organic…. I’m in!

Some Places in San Diego County to Get an Organic Salad

GoodOnYa Deli in Kearny Mesa and Encinitas, good size menu and limited hours.

Salads, soups, and sandwiches ordered at the counter.  Specialty coffees including the ‘bullet proof’ version and even bone broth!  Not the cheapest, but if you want organic meal choices for the whole family then this is a sure thing.

Peace Pies in Ocean Beach and Encinitas, small menu and limited hours.

Vegan and vegetarian food served up in a quaint friendly setting.  Pricey, but for those that eat only from the plant kingdom this is the place for you.

Jimbos …Naturally Grocery Stores with and an Organic Salad Bar in Escondido, Carlsbad, San Diego Downtown (Horton Plaza), 4S/San Diego, and Carmel Valley/Del Mar

I found I could feed myself and my kids from the organic salad bar for a pretty reasonable price.  Took a few trials to find the right amounts to meet everyone’s hunger, but it almost always has enough different choices to please all.

Whole Foods has a salad bar with organic selections too, but Jimbos is my GO-TO place because it is a local company and I looooooove buying local when I can.

One more place to enjoy an Organic Salad…. HOME!

When everything goes according to plan, I shop at my favorite organic farm stand or indie grocer and pick up what is local and in season.

Sometimes, I stop by the conventional grocery store down the block because they have a good selection of organic produce now too! YAY!

If I am time crunched or to make it even easier, I pick up a pre-made organic salad or make one from the salad bar and bring it home.  Then I add some of whatever veg and protein I have around to extend it and make it a complete meal.

Easy ORGANIC Peasy!

As someone who has worked for a better food system the past several years, I am so rewarded to see ORGANIC taking off in the conventional grocery stores and big box stores!

And, when I can easily pick up or go out for an ORGANIC SALAD in every community, then I will know the food system in the U.S. has shifted to a more health-giving focus. I am soooooooo looking forward to that day!
