First thing that comes to mind at a baby shower is a diaper, right? You can’t escape it!
Usually each guest is requested to bring a packet of diapers for the honored mommy-to-be in hopes to set her up the first month, or two. Which is great, but wouldn’t it be so much more fun incorporating diapers in a unique way versus just handing over a package of Huggies?
If you’re anything like me, then chances are you LOVE hand-making gifts for loved ones! There’s something about the process that goes into crafting that is just SO satisfying. From the conception of your idea to the actual execution.
I admit though, I can go overboard, a lot! (Just ask my husband). But as soon as my dearest friend announced she was pregnant, I wanted to personally make something that showed my excitement. Of course, there were a lot of cute things I found along the way that I gift wrapped. (I mean, c’mon, it’s baby gear – SO CUTE!) But my main gift was going to be handmade, I was sure of that. And, it had to be useful.
Being the Pinterest addict that I am, I had been coming across a lot of tutorials for diaper crafts. A baby made out of diapers, diaper castles, diaper cakes. The list went on. But the one that stood out the most to me was a diaper wreath which I thought was just too darn cute! However, most of what I found in my search either had too much information or just showed pictures. Then, there was this thing about weaving a thick enough ribbon in between each diaper to secure it on, I didn’t have patience for that. I wanted the presentation to be great, but it also needed to be simple.
The shower decor was a combination of sports and fishing. I’m a sucker for all things nautical, (I mean, we do live in San Diego) so I stuck with that for the wreath’s theme. I couldn’t believe how quick it was to make and the mommy-to-be just loved it!
List of supplies
-
Wreath frame, wash cloths, foam balls (optional) – Dollar Tree
- Diapers – Costco (but you can get them anywhere)
- Ribbon, twine, floral wire, blankets, travel-sized baby bath gear, monogram, and swatches – Walmart
- Burlap and rope – Joann’s
1) I first weaved all the loose diapers in the second rung of the frame and tied them with a ribbon. The frame broke up into about 6 sections and I was able to tie 4 diapers per section. (After I filled in the initial diapers, I added extra to close any gaps I came across).
2) I then cut the color swatches into strips, altering pattern, and tied them in between. By this time, I had the base of my wreath complete.
3) Now start embellishing! I used floral wires to help secure the heavier baby gear, and tied matching ribbon over it to break up the metal presence.
4) I weaved one spool of red rope in the center to tie all the colors in before adding the monogram and bobbers. Note: I originally had the foam balls to decorate as bobbers, but opted for the Real McCoy after coming across some extra ones I had lying around.
5) Lastly, I secured the wreath with the burlap ribbon. As you add things, you start to quickly see how heavy the wreath can become. I found that the burlap ribbon was strong enough and passed the stress test when I left it to hang on its own for a few days prior to the baby shower.
The beauty about this project is that you can go as simple or as intricate as you would like.
Remember, there are no rules or limits and there are infinite possibilities to themes!
What would your theme be? Have you made one yourself?
