You guys! I did it! I joined Jazzercise. I know what you’re thinking – “Isn’t that for old ladies?!”
Yeah, I kinda thought that too. But it turns out a Jazzercise class is not what you think. It’s a misconception to think that it’s just a bunch of golden girls with leg warmers, sweating to the oldies. You see, it’s actually so cool, I’m not sure why they let me in! I barely know the words to the songs we dance to. But that’s okay, I am a sheltered country music listener, so this Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Pit Bull stuff is kind of fun once I get moving!
Jazzercise Made Me Cool.
It’s just so hip that I feel like my cool mom card should be issued to me any day now. I will tell you – I was so nervous at first, but I knew I needed to do something for myself. I wanted a class that was just for me and would make me feel good. Personally I never felt the pressure to “bounce back” after having my son, so that wasn’t the main reason I joined.
Me Time…
I just wanted to get back to being active, get that adrenaline pumping and just be alone for a bit. Well, when I say alone, I mean away from my mommy duties for an hour or so. I was hardly alone at Jazzercise. My first day of class, I walked in like a puppy dog with my tail between my legs, but two ladies in the back row took me in as soon as I checked in. They could tell I was new and reassured me that I was going to have a good time and that nobody would judge me. They also pointed out that they love Jazzercise El Cajon because there are no mirrors! Boy were they right to point that out. As much as I practiced loving my body, I still avoided a glimpse in the mirror when I could.
The Workout Begins.
Once we started, I felt like I was back in dance class as a child – “5,6,7,8…” – I was counting in my head. It was all very unnecessary because the instructor Kate was leading the class on stage and she was very easy to follow. We started the workout with a warm up to Justin Bieber’s “What do you mean” I thought – I don’t know Justin…”what do you mean?” I can hardly understand all this hip lingo your using! But alas’ I enjoyed dancing to the beat.
As I started getting the hang of the routine I could feel a smile coming on. I was so happy to be there, I almost cried. I looked around at all of the beautiful amazing women around me. So many different ages, shapes and personalities. It was GLORIOUS. I enjoyed watching the girls in the front row get down to the beat – they were totally inspiring! I don’t have rhythm like that but man it made me smile. Since joining 3 months ago I have gone about once a week. I wish I could go more because I love it so much, but even that one day a week does so much for my sanity. It’s a total recharge. And I feel more confident in my body knowing I am taking care of it and getting stronger every time.
