Enjoying the Simple Things in Life

It’s so incredibly easy to get caught up with the hustle and bustle of life. I’m the first one to admit that I like a routine, especially when it comes to our nighttime antics. We have dinner, we take a walk around the neighborhood to get our mail, and maybe we walk across the street to play at the park; then, when we get home, we start the bedtime routine. But I felt compelled the other day to change things up a bit.

Every night while we walk around, we notice the sky and how changes colors from the sun setting. My daughter points out the pinks, purples, blues, and hues of orange, and we watch as they all fade into each other. So one day I decided I’d take them to the beach so they could actually see the sun set.

People flock to San Diego to spend time at the beach, and it’s something we often take for granted when we live here. This will in no way be an every day thing (because this mama still likes her night time routine), but taking the girls to the beach to watch the sun set into the ocean was a fun and enjoyable experience.

I told them what was going to happen before—that we’d hang out for a little bit, and then leave soon after—so there wouldn’t be too many meltdowns from the lack of play time. I’ve learned the hard way that I need to set out the plan ahead of time, so they know what to expect.

For two kids who never seem to stand still, they did just that while checking out the sun dip into the water. They noticed the colors and the sky fade from light to dark, and my oldest commented on how she was even getting sleepy by watching the sun “go to bed.” My youngest even said, “night night” to the sun.

Was the beach out of our way? Yes, a little bit, and it meant we had McDonald’s for dinner, and that they both went to bed later than usual, but for one night it was really nice to stop and enjoy the simple things in life, like watching the sun set on the beach.

Do you take advantage of where we live and enjoy the simple things in life, even if it means going a little bit out of your way and changing up your daily routine?

  1. True! We often take things for granted because we live in San Diego. But we are so lucky to be living near the beach. I love the beach. I go out and watch the sun set into the ocean with my husband. It’s a great bonding moment. Simple yet fun and enjoyable.
