What moms really want on Mother’s Day
As Mother’s Day approaches, dads will rush to the stores and buy moms their favorite flowers, a potted plant, or maybe a necklace with that ever so subtle “MOM” charm. Your kids might make you a handcrafted, glitter covered card or give you “mommy coupons” (those lovely coupons your kids promise you can use to get them to clean their rooms, take out trash, or pick up after dinner; although they secretly hope you don’t ever use them). Possibly you will even get chocolates! Any kind of chocolates, it doesn’t matter which, your children will probably want you to “share” with them anyways.
While all of these are lovely and thoughtful ideas to give mommy, I say let’s break away from the typical, “this is what you should give your mom” ideas that are given to our hubby’s and children.
What is it that I really want?
What is it that MOM really wants?
PEACE AND QUIET!
While you love your kids, and would love to spend all day cuddled up in bed with them on Sunday, (clearing my throat)… maybe a bit of peace and quiet while you eat that lovely peanut butter and jelly breakfast they just made for you, would be lovely! And while you are at it, please add a mimosa or two.
TIME
For ANYTHING! In this fast paced world we live in, time is something we moms are lacking. The gift of time to do what we want? Imagine the possibilities……
Time to do our hair, our makeup, pee in peace and by ourselves, eat while sitting down, meet with a friend, get a mani/pedi, or just to do nothing. Many of us moms don’t have the luxury of time to ourselves. We sometimes forget what to do with free time. What is free time anyways? I, myself, have gone over a year since my last manicure, because who has time for a salon stop every 2 weeks in order to keep my nicely new painted nails from chipping while I run a household?
TO SLEEP IN
Enough said! Most parents will attest to the fact that their children will have a hard time waking up M-F but on Saturday and Sunday when you can sleep in, they decide to wake you up at the crack of dawn. So DAD, while the kids might be excited to jump on the bed and share their gifts and breakfast in bed, please just let mom sleep. Giving her time to wake up on her own will payoff later on.
A CLEAN HOUSE
When I was a kid, my mother would tell my sister and I that we lived like pigs, and in turn we would often be offended by this! Now that we are mothers, we understand where our mom was coming from. I’m not saying I need my home to be spotless, but a constant state of cleanliness wouldn’t hurt. This might be a far stretch for many children, since they hate cleaning and many of us might have little ones that just can’t.
That’s were daddy comes in. Daddies- please, pretty please, give your wife a two-hour cleaning service. Oh man, wouldn’t that be AWESOME!?! Seriously, are we moms the only people in the house that see the dirty dishes, or the dust building up on the shelves? For some reason we have those bionic eyes that help us see the crud on the baseboards. If anyone wanted to make my day, they would clean my home. I can dream, can’t I?
HUGS AND KISSES
That goes without saying right? Some of us have pre-teen kids or teenagers that no longer wish to show affection. Every day that I drop off my little one at Kindergarten, I get a hug and a kiss along with a big “I love you”. It’s always the highlight of my day. I also know that my 8 year old boy has stopped wanting to tell me that he loves me, because it’s “mushy stuff”, and my 13 year old only hugs me when she needs something from me.
So on this Mother’s Day, give your mommy what she REALLY wants, and shower her with hugs and kisses. Remember that she once wiped your bum and kissed your boo-boos.
Mom’s what else would you want on Mother’s Day?
I’m so happy to read this list because really, not wanting to spend the day with my kids sounded selfish. Glad to hear I’m not the only one!!!
I know, I kind of feel guilty for wanting alone time too.
A clean house! YES!!!
If only it could stay clean right?
Every year, every holiday, all I ever want! I swear I they think Im joking? Happy Mothers day!!
That’s exactly what I want is to sleep in through breakfast and have lunch at my favorite Thai place and go home to a clean house with a choice of delivery places for dinner.
No joke, moms need to feel refreshed too. All you can do is keep asking, maybe they will get the hint.
That’s what I wish for every year, but it doesn’t happen. Although I do enjoy my presents, mani/pedi sounds fabulous. I laughed when you mentioned our mom yelling at us…lol Have you said that to your kids? I might have, maybe.
