Finding the BEST Workout for You :: Your Unicorn Workout

3

The unicorn workout. Have you heard of it? I first heard this term when discussing workouts with San Diego Moms Blog boss Jenna, and it’s stuck with me since. It’s what you call the perfect workout…for YOU!

I understand not everyone has the time, child care, or physical ability to workout as much as others. And let’s face- it not everyone wants to workout. This is not a shaming post! You do you! I just want to let you know that a great workout is out there waiting for you; but it takes a little effort to find. If you’re worried about being a newbie and not keeping up with everyone in a new fitness class- don’t worry! We all started somewhere.

That said, I have a couple of ideas for how to find the best workout for you.

  • Ask around– Talk to other moms and find out what they like and dislike about their workout. Get the scoop on local gyms: friendly, clean, trustworthy childcare, etc. Let them know you’re looking to get more active and could use a workout buddy.

  • Try it– Just like those green eggs and ham- you won’t know if you like it until you try it. There is so much to choose from so just step up and take a trial class to see if it’s the right fit for you. A few months back I had the chance to try a spin class at Rush Cycle and it was amazing! I would have never thought to give it a shot, but I’m glad I did. All it can take is one class or session to find what works for you.

  • Mix it up– So you have a unicorn workout already? It’s nice to have some ideas for when you just can’t make it out or want to add a little variety. My friend Carrie is a huge advocate of fitness outside of the gym. She and her friends team up to workout at the park or in their living rooms. They mix burpees, squats, planks and more all while holding each other accountable and having fun. I have another friend who squeezes in a quick workout dvd when she gets off work. Keep your workout fun by setting new goals. Try taking it to the beach! We have perfect weather here and even a light walk along the shore will have you feeling great.

  • Put the mirror and scale away– The best workout is the one that makes you shine. It’s what makes you sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to hit the day running. It brings you peace and tranquility while you focus and it shows you a side of strength you didn’t know you had inside. So put the mirror down. Don’t look in the mirror to see if a workout fits you. It’s going to show more on how you feel inside and that will transfer to a beautiful outside. Results won’t happen overnight so if you’re looking for the perfect workout that’ll have you shedding pounds immediately, then that’s a like looking for an actual unicorn.

What’s your go-to workout? What do you love about it? Is there a workout that you have questions about or have been too timid to try?

  1. I do a abs/squats workout I made up after years of FitnessBlender video programs. I do it during naptime 3 days a week and it only takes me about 25 minutes. It’s my favorite, it doesn’t require a gym membership and it seems to be working so I’m happy with it!

  2. Awesome Rachel! I love that it’s your favorite and not something you’re dreading or feel forced to do!
