Confessions of a Stay at Home Mom: You Want me to do WHAT?

stay at home momI am a stay at home mom.

The definition of a stay at home parent is someone who stays home to raise her children. Why do so many people think stay at home moms only watch soap operas and eat bon-bons all day?

Between all my children’s activities, I find being a stay at home parent is the hardest job in the world. Stay at home parents would earn $115,000 per year performing duties as chefs, nurses, maids, and more.

As a stay at home parent, we are asked to do the most RIDICULOUS favors for our friends and family members. While I am a stay at home mom, it doesn’t mean I’m not busy. I do, however, have a hard time saying “no” to people- but adding more to my plate can cause meltdowns at home. As a result of my frustration, I asked my stay at home mom friends what crazy favors they have been asked to do.

Here are a few:

“My son’s father once asked me to go get his car from work in Poway and take it for an oil change, then bring it back to him, because I wasn’t doing anything anyway (we live in El Cajon). He also told me I should install the new sod when it arrived since I’d be home. Our son was 3 weeks old.” –L

“My mother in law sent us an email saying I should visit my husband’s grandparents with my one year old daughter, which was 2 hours each way, because I wasn’t working. I was pregnant with our second child.”–B

“Can you break into my house through the back window and pull some frozen chicken out to thaw? I forgot.” –E

“I had someone ask me to babysit her kids so she could catch up on her Netflix show!” –A

“The school asked me to pick up my neighbor’s kid because her parents didn’t. It was 6pm. I did, but it was a 1 hour round trip.” –L

“I had someone ask me to go over to her house every day to check for packages that never showed up. She later asked me to go to the actual post office to get said boxes that ended up weighing a million pounds.” –J

“When I was pregnant, I worked from home for a client who lived 45 minutes away. The client expected me to drop in at least once a week, carry a bunch of gear up a hill to her apartment, all without ever asking if she or the 3 other folks working from her home could meet me to assist.” –K

The moral of the story is don’t assume the stay at home parent you know is available to do favors on a whim. If you need help, they will offer if they can. If they don’t offer, don’t take it personal. They’re busy with their own lives and might be available to help some other time.

What are some crazy things you have been asked to do as a stay at home mom?
