My Try at Growing Cacti From Seed

Have you ever just HAD to try something because others have said that its just IMPOSSIBLE to do? That there’s no way you can do it? Well, that was me before I tried to grow my very own cactus collection… from seed!!

I am a cactus lover. Like… beyond obsessed. I am so intrigued by the many shapes, species, and sizes, and the fact that they can survive on basically nothing! I wanted to try something that would challenge me and I wanted to see if I could do the said “impossible”!

After researching many blogs and websites, I couldn’t quite figure out what I wanted to do. Most blogs suggested buying a warming light and special grow boxes for the cacti seeds. Since I didn’t want to invest in all of the equipment for something that may not work, I decided to go with the bare necessities: A packet of seeds (ordered off of Amazon), some cactus/succulent soil, and an old egg carton.

Here is my very unprofessional guide to growing your own cacti from seed:

  1. Find an old egg carton.
  2. Fill it with cactus/succulent soil
  3. Sprinkle cactus seeds on top of the soil, and gently push them into the soil! This step is very important! You don’t cover the seeds with soil… you literally just sprinkle them on top of the soil and press down on them.
  4. Keep the soil MOIST.
  5. Keep them in sunshine and watch them G R O W !!!

After two weeks I had teeny tiny baby cacti!!

I couldn’t believe it! You will see in the second picture in my collage below that the cacti actually grow down into the soil and the seed ends up on top of the cacti… so amazing!

I planted my seeds back in September, and the last picture is what they look like now! They are still so tiny, but they have spikes and there are tons of different varieties!

cacti growingI have about 40 cacti growing and I can’t wait to see if I can get at least a few of them to mature into full cacti eventually! So, if something like this excites you – go give it a try!

You never know what could happen and hey- you might get some awesome cacti out of it!
