Surviving flu season as a mom can be quite a challenge. After all, if mama goes down, we all go down! Below are some tips and tricks I have up my sleeve that keep me afloat during flu season each year.

Knock on wood, our family rarely gets the flu. It wasn’t until recently when my husband and kids came down with the flu when I was reminded just how important it is to take care of yourself. Who would take care of your family if mama is sick too?

As your family grows, illness seems to plague your family more often and can hit harder than ever. In my case, it seems as though we all spread germs around the house so lightning fast that if one of us gets sick, we all get sick. Sometimes it takes us a full two weeks to recover.

I am no expert by any means, but with my experience as a preschool teacher, mom of three and health and wellness blogger, I have found the following tips and tricks to be extremely effective in fighting the flu throughout flu season. As a matter of fact, these tips and tricks can be used all year long to stay healthy.

Proper hand washing, food handling and household cleaning.

I feel like this one is a given. There is nothing that is more effective than proper hand washing, food handling and household cleaning. As I am sitting here caring for my three kids and husband, I have a box of disposal gloves handy for handling any contaminated items around the house. I also have a bottle of hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray on the counter that I literally use all day long.

As I see my flu-infested kids rub their hands all over the furniture and every item in the house, a quick spray-down with disinfecting spray goes a long way. Don’t forget about door knobs, toilet handles, faucets, knobs, and other household appliances that may be contaminated.

Homeopathic Medicine & Natural Remedies

You may or may not be a believer in homeopathic medicine and natural remedies, but I happen to believe they are one of the reasons I have been able to stay relatively healthy throughout the years.

Furthermore, studies on mice have shown significant evidence that natural medicine can fight the flu and other illnesses.

My favorite natural remedies include:

  • Drinking elderberry syrup (here is a great instant pot elderberry syrup recipe you can make at home)
  • Taking vitamin D, omega-3s and probiotics daily
  • Adding nutritional yeast to recipes
  • Using essential oils to support bodily functions
  • Taking homeopathic medicines such as Boiron products

Drink Water

This one is another no-brainer. Water is what rids our body of toxins. Whether sick or not, you should be drinking as many ounces of water per day as half of your body weight, if not more.
