Since its inception in 2018, Global Community Engagement Day has taken place annually on January 28. It aims to unite communities in actively participating in meaningful initiatives. It also fosters collaboration, compassion, and service. With recent weather disasters in San Diego County, this day becomes an opportunity for collective action to assist those in need. Moreover, it serves as a valuable learning experience for our children.
Organize a Community Cleanup:
Plan a neighborhood cleanup day to beautify public spaces, parks, or streets in your area. It’s a hands-on way for children to learn about environmental responsibility. It also presents an opportunity to help provide disaster relief by cleaning up debris from the storms. Local neighborhood groups on Facebook and Nextdoor are great resources for coordinating such an event. You may also locate one that is already scheduled for Global Community Engagement Day.
Create Care Packages:
Assemble care packages with essential items and deliver them to neighbors impacted by damage from the storm, families in need, or individuals experiencing homelessness. Local Facebook groups such as Buy Nothing are helpful in either listing available items for gifting or fulfilling an “Ask” for items a neighbor needs. Also, check profiles of local organizations and businesses for fundraising or donation drives. For example, the local outdoor skating rink Ringer’s Roller Rink is holding a collection drive for socks, shoes, and blankets through February 2, 2024.
Support Local Businesses:
Encourage children to understand the importance of supporting local businesses. Embrace the spirit of Global Community Engagement Day by exploring local stores and eateries. This experience fosters meaningful interactions with fellow residents and business owners, enhancing the bonds that create a strong sense of community.
Volunteer at Local Charities:
Join local charity events or volunteer programs together as a family, whether it’s at a food bank, homeless shelter, or community center. There are numerous organizations in the greater San Diego area where children can volunteer. San Diego Humane Society, Father Joe’s Villages, and Ronald McDonald House outline the ways community members of various ages can volunteer their time.
