Meet Jamie Schiffer, Mom + Principal Scientist + CEO, Om Baby Bliss

We are so grateful that Jamie shared her story with us…

“I am the founder and CEO of Om Baby Bliss and a pregnant mother of two. I am passionate about giving new families a space to move their bodies, bond with baby, and grow their village. Outside of work, when I’m not running after my kiddos I love spa days with friends, taking care of our little flock of backyard chickens, and hiking/camping.”

Our ‘As Strong as the Mother Next to Me’ weekly spotlight highlights and celebrates Moms in San Diego and across the globe who believe in building up and supporting moms.

We are excited to share Jamie’s story with you today!

How did you get started with your current role?

Om Baby Bliss (OBB) started as a single group series for new moms to connect with their bodies again postpartum through yoga, while bonding with their babies through infant massage. I slowly started expanding my offerings to include toddler yoga classes, daddy and me classes, music classes and now focusing on building our OBB Pilates village in North Park San Diego. My day-to-day life in business the past few months has consisted of teaching classes, constructing and decorating our Pilates studio, and onboarding instructors.

What does “As Strong as the Mother Next to Me” mean to you?

It means to keep going, putting one foot in front of the other on hard days and celebrating wins with the moms in our life on good days. It reminds me of something we say a lot in our classes at OBB, which is “Let the mom next to you motivate you through this pulse, this rep, this burn.” We can’t do motherhood alone, and sometimes just knowing we have someone next to us going through the same things is enough for us to be the strong pillars our families and society need.

What strategies do you use to stay connected?

While my support network is rather small and consists of my husband, my nanny, my mom and a few good friends and Aunties, it is mighty.

My husband and I lean on each other a lot, and I am very fortunate that he is truly an equal partner. We come up with a plan for the week every Sunday together, and check in with each other every night after the kids go to bed. He does the majority of the cleaning around the house, drops my son off at school every morning, and puts our kiddos down for bed at least three nights a week. Challenging times have brought us closer together, and allowed us to grow even more deeply in love than when we were first dating or even married.

I wouldn’t be able to do any part of my life without our nanny Lorena. She has become a huge part of our family, and I cannot imagine life without her calm demeanor, kind heart, and patience.

My mom, or Ba as we call her, is so wonderful with my kiddos and has taught them an incredible amount. She always finds new ways to keep them engaged and learning, and has supported me so much in starting my business.

How do you involve your children in your professional life, if at all?

My children are definitely involved in my business. They are my beta testers for all my classes, and sometimes models for my brand. As they grow, I hope my class offerings will grow beside them, including classes for parents and older school aged children to bond through yoga, Pilates and sound baths.

Can you share an example of a collaboration with another mom that was particularly successful or fulfilling?

Oh my goodness so many! I’ve loved partnering with @mysunandmyself, @pilatesbyjulia, Jackie my co-teacher for our Harmonious beginnings music and infant massage class, Erin our Sunday sound bath instructor, and so many more.

How do you define strength in motherhood?

1) Keeping calm
2) Putting one foot in front of the other
3) Making the hard decisions to lead your family

Doing all the above on a daily basis without any acknowledgement or compensation from society, unfortunately. I hope this changes in my lifetime!

How do you celebrate small victories in motherhood and business?

Through spa retreats with friends, camp trips, dinners out and my husband will typically buy me flowers and NA Champaign for a small celebration between just the two of us.

How do you think societal perceptions of motherhood have changed over the years?

I think there is more awareness and noise around the unequal burden that parenthood brings to mothers, but the structural changes have been small and slow. I hope in my lifetime to see structural changes like being able to bring your infant/child to work in the first year of life, on site daycare as a standard/norm, options for over a year parental leave, and requiring fathers to take leave as well.

How did you build your community of moms around you?

Well, to be honest, sometimes there aren’t enough hours in the day for very specific self-care routines. I try to find joy for myself in the work I do for my business (which is usually easy to do given the nature of my work), and the time I spend with my children (which is also usually easy to do once a day). On crazy days, I go for a short run, long walk, take care of my chickens or take a long shower to fill my cup. I also tend to get up before the kids so I can have 30 minutes by myself with a cup of coffee to prepare mentally for my day/week ahead.

How important is it to you to surround yourself with other moms professionally and personally?

It’s the entire motivation behind Om Baby Bliss!

What piece of advice would you give another mom who is struggling with balancing motherhood and business?

My one piece of advice is to mentally check-in with yourself on a daily basis. Ask yourself if the work you are doing is filling your cup to be a better mother or if it is draining you. If it is draining you, thinking about what changes you can make to improve it, or about how to reduce that work in your life.

Do you have a non-profit or cause that you want us to know more about? And why are you so passionate about this?

Birth line San Diego, Miracle Babies, and the Ronald McDonald house

What challenges do you face as a mother and businesswoman?

Finding balance is hard as a business owner, especially without feeling mom guilt.

Tell us about a challenging time in your business or in your role in motherhood and how you overcame it?

I have a hard time dropping my kids off at preschool and TK. I know they are learning so much and getting so much out of being around other children and have amazing teachers, but I can’t help but feel like I’m not doing enough when I leave them at preschool/TK. Some part of me feels that I should be with them all day! While my brain knows that’s not what I want for their social and intellectual development, my heart wants more time with them. I think they can sense it, and they get more upset when I do drop offs. So now I just do picks ups and it is all a lot smoother for both my kiddos and family!

What are some of your favorite resources managing your business and/or home life that have saved you time?

Automation for business is key – I use the MindBody app for booking and it has automated a lot of my business for me. For home life, keeping shared calendars virtually and a whiteboard calendar next to our front door help tremendously.

Can you share a moment when another mom’s support made a significant difference in your life?

Yes, after I miscarried in April 2024, I had a mom friend who was going through similar fertility challenges. We went for walks and to coffee to just kind-of sit together. We talked a little bit, but really neither of us had a whole lot to say. We were both just sad, and having each other to sit next to in our sadness, it made all the difference to me.

Reilley Valenzona

Reilley has been a wonderful real-talk mama in my life. She runs an incredible mom’s group as a licensed therapist that are amazing and I have loved watching our boys learn and grow together.

Erin Goerner

Erin is an incredible mother and was part of my first Mama & Me group series. She has overcome so much to be a mother, and has now come back to Om Baby Bliss to share her knowledge and gifts of sound baths with our community, all while working full-time in industry. She inspires me to slow down in motherhood and to notice every little moment with my littles.

We are thrilled to bring back our weekly spotlight that will highlight and celebrate Moms in San Diego and across the globe who believe in building up and supporting moms.

We hope that if we can debunk the idea that you have to take on this journey alone, as a community of moms, we will all walk away stronger, inspired, and raise stronger children and become better partners. We’d love to hear from you!
