I Have a Great Husband and I’m Tired of Keeping it a Secret

2

When was the last time you heard someone say their husband is a great person, an extraordinary person?

Now when was the last time you heard someone say their husband is lazy, inattentive, selfish and distant?

The latter is the much more popular one, but all husbands aren’t terrible. Some of us are fortunate enough to be married to wonderful men, so we don’t we talk about them more?

A few months ago I told a friend that I couldn’t stand my husband. Just get me out of the house and away from him! I instantly felt horrible. I had become like one of the many voices I’ve heard complaining about their spouse. He’s a great man but that was a rough weekend. Afterwards I felt the need to set the record straight- he’s awesome. So is that bragging?

Not really, at least not in my opinion. It also goes to show you that everyone has their rough days.

My husband doesn’t help or babysit. Sure, sometimes I have to remind him of some around-the-house items that need attention, but I never feel like I’m pulling teeth. He didn’t exactly run in excitement to change diapers back in the day but he never said it was below him. Come over for dinner and you’ll find him doing the dishes, setting the table, etc. Those things aren’t what make him great though.

This man is patient. He waits. He listens and pushes himself to understand what my day is like. The relationship between him and his children exceeds anything I thought before about what a father is. He works hard, long hours and often I’ll catch him working remotely. He doesn’t have much in terms of expensive material things but his children are always taken care of.

So how did we get here? A few days after we became parents we had a long talk. We planned so much out, but once you’re holding your first born in your arms, a lot of plans go by the wayside. This was a serious life changing talk. From here on out it was all hands on deck. If there were any ideas of what a man of the house shouldn’t do then they were gone. I can’t do everything myself and even though I’d rather things be done my way, I need a teammate. That’s what he is. A teammate. Because our family is a team. If you’ve spent time with us you’ve probably heard us use that term a lot. It’s one team and no one succeeds if we all aren’t in.

I’m calling out to other moms who have an awesome teammate. Don’t be scared to share your love and sing his praises. Above all make sure that you tell him you appreciate him.

  1. Great post!
I’m that annoying giggly teenage girl bragging on my boyfriend. Except we’ve been married for 13 years and together much longer. He is still my favorite thing about my life. I choose to see and appreciate his amazing qualities and to forgive him his flaws- lord knows he forgives A LOT of mine.
I think there would be a lot more happy marriages if we all just appreciated our spouses a little more
    🙂

    • Awe I love this! We agree that it’s definitely a choice to love your spouse and love them well 🙂 Thanks for being a member of the happy marriages club <3
