Top 10 Things you NEED to buy at Aldi

If you haven’t caught onto the Aldi obsession- you might want to jump in now. Being that it’s the start of a new year, we are all in organization/saving/anything that makes our lives simpler and easier mode. Aldi saves you money and now that I have shopped here- I can’t go back to the “regular” grocery stores!

Tips~ Bring a quarter, because you need to pop one into the row of carts to retrieve it before you go into the store. This forces you to return it if you want that quarter back. It’s suppose to cut down on cart theft, which saves them money.

The only caution I have about shopping at Aldi is that they don’t always consistently carry items. For example, if I wanted to add yams to my list for the week, and I headed to Aldi, there is a chance that they aren’t carrying yams that week. You would have to settle for an alternate, like sweet potatoes.

Also, you don’t have a lot of choices at Aldi. In order to keep costs low, their store is small and simple. You don’t have 128,058 choices for cereal- there’s more like 6-8 choices.

There’s usually one person at checkout, (because there’s never any lines!) and that process is a little different as well. They scan your items that you take out from your cart and lay on the conveyor belt, and then they put them right back into your cart. You are responsible for bagging your own groceries. (My kids love this option!)

*Also, prices can change, so you always want to look at the weekly ad in the paper, or the one that is provided as you walk into the store.

With all that being said, it’s worth the 50% savings you can get. I have complied a list of 10 things that you can save a ton of money on if you buy them at Aldi. Although they aren’t the one stop shop that I wish they would be, it’s totally worth a weekly trip. I still buy my meats at Costco, and other bulk items, because they have the best deals around.

Here’s what I buy at Aldi:

1- Baking supplies. Sugar, canned pumpkin, salt grinders, other spices, condiments, are all great quality but at a cheaper price. Off the top of my head, canned pumpkin in the store (which I use a lot in baking as an egg/oil replacement) is $2.99 where at Aldi it’s as low as .79.

2- Fruit. Mangos are always at least .68, bananas can be as low at .29/lb and pineapples are .99! Not .99/lb!

3- Wine. As the sister store to Trader Joes, (obviously the cheaper version) there’s a great selection of two-buck-chuck type of wines. Wine actually yields the most choices, as at my store there is half a wall dedicated to only wine!

4- Hummus. At $1.79 for hummus at Aldi, it’s a steal compared to grocery stores who charge $3.99. We occasionally make our own to save money as well, but sometimes you just need to grab some quick!

5- Veggies. Brussel sprouts and asparagus can get really expensive at the grocery store. I grabbed my own bag from the grocery store once and checked my receipt and it said I spent almost $8 for them! Brussels for a bag are around $2.45 and asparagus is around $2.89 for a large 1lb bag.

6- Orange Juice. Can be up to $3.99 at the grocery store. We score ours for $2.29! And it tastes delicious!

7- Avocados. They can be as low as .49! We HAVE to have avocados in our house, and when the avocado stands aren’t up ( I love me a bag of 25 avocados for $5!), I will take them for as cheap as I can get!

8- Greek yogurt. This is something I love and can’t find it any cheaper then $5 for vanilla greek yogurt. Even WalMart sells it for $4.98. SO- when I walked into Aldi and saw it for $3.69… I knew I would be hooked on Aldi!

9- Snacks. They have delicious options for snacks for cheap. Dry roasted edamame ($1.89), cheddar penguins ($1.49), quinoa chips ($1.69), applesauce ($1.89), pita chips ($1.99), and more! They have a lot of organic options as well.

10- Almond milk. We aren’t big on milk in my house, but we do love almond milk. At $1.99, that’s the best price I have seen for an individual carton of it.

Now obviously, everyone’s shopping needs vary, but this is just a snapshot of some of my favorite purchases at Aldi. Change is hard sometimes, but it’s worth it if you are really looking to save some $$.
