Embracing June Gloom in San Diego

0

You hear it a lot out on the streets of the city these days: “But the sun was just out!” “Why isn’t it warm yet?” “Summer was supposed to be here by now, right??”

June gloom started around . . . uh, February of this year, unfortunately. Combined with more rain than usual, it has been unusually gray in San Diego. I get that it’s easy to complain! I have two children who both note—every single day—that we aren’t going swimming nearly as much this year. They’re right, we’ve had to come up with more weather-appropriate activities.

The beach is still fun, even when it’s gloomy!

It could be 90 degrees next week in SD. You never really know, but up until then, here are some ways to embrace June gloom in our gorgeous home.

Visit Your Local Library

If you haven’t checked it out already, your local library has a packed schedule of activities for kids that really ramps up in summertime. Story hours, playtime hours, visits from musicians and clowns and live animals are all coming up. One of my son’s favorite events was an hour with the snakes from the local herpetological society. Any resident of the City or County of San Diego can check out museums in Balboa Park for free. It’s their Free Tuesday in the Park program, and every museum is on the list. Click here to see the schedule and plan your trip.

Grow a Garden

Without extreme heat, you and your children can stay comfortable in the garden, planning and planting for the months ahead. Homes in the inland region of San Diego can currently plant sweet potatoes, squash, tomatoes, watermelons, all kinds of beans, and more. The list varies slightly for coastal residents: corn, cucumbers, and eggplants will all thrive if you get the seeds into the ground now. Learn more here!

Head to the Fair

There is still time to enjoy the SD County Fair before it closes on July 4th. When it’s really hot out, the Fair can be kinda miserable. The smells wafting from the animal barns combined with one too many corn dogs don’t always make for a steady stomach. I’m also not a fan of going down the giant slide with sunscreen dripping into my eyes. A little bit of marine layer makes the experience so much more pleasant!

So there you go . . . embrace the weird weather and make the most of it. It’ll be hot again soon enough in our little corner of California. When it happens, I’m sure we’ll grumble about that too!
