coastal clean up San Diego’s coast got a little cleaner, and a whole lot of love, thanks to the incredible efforts of Cox Communications employees in celebration of National Volunteer Month.

In partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego, more than 375 volunteers from Cox Communications, Cox Automotive, and Cox Enterprises came together for their annual community cleanup, removing nearly 700 pounds of litter and debris from Bonita Cove, Mission Beach, and Mission Bay.

Now in its fifth year, this meaningful tradition continues to grow, bringing together employees, local leaders, and community partners with one shared goal: protecting San Diego’s beautiful outdoor spaces for generations to come.

national volunteer monthThe event kicked off with remarks from Cox leaders, including Sam Attisha and Chanelle Hawken, alongside team members from the office of Scott Peters, who joined in the day’s efforts.

Beyond the hands-on impact, Cox also presented I Love a Clean San Diego with a generous $25,000 donation, further supporting the nonprofit’s mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable region.

“Cox employees show up in a big way every year for San Diego’s environment,” shared Steve Morris, executive director of I Love a Clean San Diego. “When hundreds of volunteers come together like this, the impact is immediate, cleaner shorelines, healthier habitats, and a stronger community.”

That sense of community is exactly what keeps this event growing year after year. For Cox, giving back isn’t just a one-day effort, it’s part of their culture.

“Supporting the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do,” said Sam Attisha. “Together with I Love a Clean San Diego, we’re proud to protect our environment while continuing to raise the bar for impact each year.”

Held during National Volunteer Month, the cleanup also highlighted the power of collective action. Representative Scott Peters shared his appreciation for volunteers who dedicate their time to preserving San Diego’s natural beauty, noting that efforts like these help ensure beaches and bays remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Events like this play a critical role in protecting local ecosystems. As beach traffic increases, so does the amount of waste left behind, especially single-use plastics like bags, wrappers, and straws. These items can be harmful to marine life, often mistaken for food by animals like sea turtles.

By removing debris before it reaches the water, volunteers help protect wildlife, preserve natural habitats, and keep San Diego’s coastlines clean and welcoming.

And the impact is only growing. Last year alone, Cox volunteers collected nearly 1,000 pounds of waste in Mission Bay, proving that small actions, when multiplied, can make a big difference.
