    Wickedly Simple Halloween Ideas and Activities!

    As Halloween is approaching we’ve been having fun starting the celebration early. Halloween-themed activities are a fun way to keep curiosity and the love of learning alive.

    Whether you are distance learning or homeschooling, these awesome ideas are sure to be a hit in your household. Here are a few of our favorite Halloween activities we’ve completed so far. 

    Spooky Ghost Blow Art

    Take painting to the next level with this Spooky Ghost Blow Art activity. You will need black construction paper, white paint, and a straw. Simple! 

    Drop a few dots of white paint on a piece of black construction paper.

    Next, take a straw and hold the straw at an angle right at the base of the white paint.

    Blow into the straw and watch the paint spread.

    Play with the direction of the straw as you blow on the paint. Observe what happens to the shape of the ghost with each movement.

    The last step: take googly eyes and place them on your ghost. You can use a sharpie when the paint dries to draw a mouth on your new spooky creation.

                     

    He decided to make one huge ghost with about twenty eyes. I enjoyed watching him count every eye as he talked about his spooky Halloween ghost. 

    Halloween Themed Writing Center

    Getting a child who prefers to move when he learns to sit and practice writing is no easy task. Depending on your child’s age you can tweak the center to reflect their writing level. 

    We are currently working on identifying lowercase letters as well as practicing writing both upper and lower case letters.

    Materials on the writing center include an upper and lowercase stamp set with tombstone shaped paper. A small whiteboard and a few easy Halloween sight words in a bucket.  A pumpkin notepad and a mason jar with various writing tools. The goal is to make the center look fun and enticing. Never make them stay longer than they want too.

          

    Create Your Own Spooky Story

    We used the pumpkin notebook to create our very own spooky Halloween story. Together we chose three of the Halloween sight words and created a short story around them. Although, I wrote down the majority of the story as he dictated. His job was to write down the Halloween sight word when it was first used in the story.

                          

    Halloween Playdough Station

    Theme or no theme, a playdough center is the perfect sensory and fine motor skill activity.  We love making our playdough from scratch. Not only is it super soft and non-toxic, but we can also always find the ingredients in our pantry. The recipe we use does not contain cream of tartar.

    Depending on the age of your child, making playdough is something that can be done on a countertop together. Just be careful, the wet ingredients have to be on the very warm to hot side when mixing with the dry ingredients. Place all the wet ingredients in the microwave for about 45 seconds to a minute. Mix the wet and dry ingredients together and mix until it forms a ball. Knead the playdough until it cools down. 

    • 1 cup of flour
    • ¼ cup of salt
    • ¾ cup of water
    • 1 tablespoon of oil
    • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice or vinegar
    • Black and orange food coloring

    Set out Halloween cookie cutters, craft items, and a rolling pin for the playdough.

    Charlie the Spider Craft

    Roll a small piece of black playdough into a ball. This is the main body of the spider. Set out google eyes and small pieces of black pipe cleaner for spider legs. Let your child create their own spider with as many legs and eyes as they would like. 

    Jack O’ Lantern Math Activity

    A simple and exciting way to introduce basic geometry concepts is through a fun hands-on symmetry activity. Take orange card stock or construction paper and cut out four pumpkin shapes.

    On the paper, pumpkins draw a different Jack o’ lantern face on each one. Introduce the word symmetry and cut the pumpkins in half in front of your child. Cut all four pumpkins in half. Explain two sides of the pumpkins which are the same is symmetrical. Use two different pumpkin sides to demonstrate an asymmetrical pumpkin.

                         

    Using two sheets of black construction paper have your child glue two symmetrical pumpkins on one sheet. And two asymmetrical pumpkins on the other. Easy peasy!

                             

    The main goal of this activity is to simply introduce the words Symmetrical and Asymmetrical. Don’t worry too much if your child is still confused on the concept.

    Five Exciting Science Explorations with Baking Soda

    What bubbles, pops, fizzes, and is messy? Explore the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar with these five entertaining and educational science experiments!

    We love exploring and getting messy with science! Lately, we have been experimenting with baking soda and white vinegar. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and acetic acid (white vinegar) reactions are a simple and fun way to introduce chemistry.

    When I recall the acid-base reaction projects of my childhood, I am taken back to the classic clay volcano. Because of those fond experiences, I have developed a love for science explorations I hope to pass on.

    Volcano

    Don’t throw that old playdough away just yet! Cut out the bottom of a disposable cup, turn it upside down and use it as the volcano base. Roll out the play-dough and form it around the cup. The trick is to use large pieces of play-dough. Next, fill the volcano 1/4 to 1/2 full with baking soda and add a few drops of food coloring. Lastly, pour vinegar into your volcano until the fizzing stops.

    Frozen Moon Rocks

    Pour 1/2 box of baking soda, a few drops of food coloring, and glitter into a bowl. Add 1/4 cup of water to the baking soda mix. Mold the mixture into small moon balls (if the mixture is too wet, add more baking soda.) Place the moon balls on a lined cookie sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes. We decided to freeze our moon rocks overnight and share them with a friend the next day. Freezing extends the reaction and play, make sure to have plenty of vinegar on hand!

                       

    Baking Soda Bomb

    Baking Soda Bombs are a great way to observe the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar. Pour a 1/2 cup of vinegar into a plastic bag and partly seal the bag. Next, place a tablespoon of baking soda in the center of a tissue. Wrap the tissue around the baking soda to create a packet. Here comes the tricky part. Drop the baking soda packet into the bag, squeeze out as much air as possible and quickly seal the bag. Gently shake the mixture and place it on the ground. Watch the plastic bag fill with bubbles and make a pop!

                       

    Bottle Rocket

    Flip an empty water bottle upside down and tape three large popsicle sticks around the bottle. Each stick should be about two inches apart. As a result, it will create a stand for the bottle rocket, when it is placed on the ground. Fill the bottle ½ full with vinegar. Place 1 tablespoon of baking soda in the middle of the tissue, add a couple of drops of food coloring and fold it closed. The next part needs to be done quickly. Drop the baking soda packet into the bottle rocket, place the cap on the bottle rocket. Shake it gently and quickly place it on the ground. The pressure from the carbon dioxide gas will pop the bottle cap off, propelling the rocket into the air.

                         

    Inflatable Balloon Experiment

    Bump up your science game by moving on from the demonstration stage to experimentation. For this activity, you will need three empty water bottles, three balloons, and three different liquids (vinegar, water, and lemon juice.) Fill one bottle ½ full of vinegar, the second bottle ½ full of water, and the third bottle ½ full of slightly diluted lemon juice. Fill each balloon ¼ to ⅓ full of baking soda and attach each filled balloon to a bottle. When you are ready, hold the balloon straight up so the baking soda falls into the bottle. Talk about what you observe, how each reaction varies, and chart the results. This also a fun way to get in extra writing practice.

    Monster Jam drivers are trained, world-class male and female athletes who have mastered not only the physical strength and mental stamina needed to compete, but the vital dexterity neededto control 12,000-pound machines capable of doing back flips, vertical two-wheel skills and racing at speeds up to 70 miles per hour to produce jaw-dropping, live motor sports action seen around the world. 

    We saw Dragonoid almost go down, but the driver redeemed the trick and landed right back on his feet.

    I was born in Brazil, but I call San Diego home. I started my venture into professional photography by assisting at weddings, but soon fell in love with photographing families, children, and newborns. Oh, and how I love newborn snuggles and kid’s laughs!!! 

    I am married to a wonderful man, and I am a mama to two very happy boys –  Lucas (22 months old) and Benjamin (7 months old). Having 2 under 2 has been the craziest, wildest, and most WONDERFUL experience of my life.  Our family is completed by our fur kids, Darwin and Sandi. She has toured in Europe with Janis Joplin’s original band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and has formed her own band, titled The Mary Bridget Davies Group that tours in festivals and clubs worldwide. Her band The Mary Bridget Davies Group released an album with original songs in 2012 titled Wanna Feel Somethin.

    Previously, she was nominated in 2013 for a Helen Hayes Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical. Davies has also performed in the First National Tour of A Night With Janis Joplin and the Broadway musical revue It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, selling out shows across the country.

    Ms. Davies recent performances include SXSW and a residency in Pasadena, CA, where she was joined by The Doors’ Robby Krieger, Slash, The MC5’s Wayne Kramer, Dave & Phil Alvin of The Blasters, Bob Mothersbaugh of DEVO, Ty Taylor of Vintage Trouble, Doug Pinnick of King’s X and members of Tom Morello’s Nightwatchmen and Gnarls Barkley.

    My daughter had SO much fun at the new Play Space at Westfield UTC!
