Extreme Sailing Comes to San Diego {This Weekend!}

This is a sponsored post brought to you by Extreme Sailing.

We are so lucky to have a wide variety of family fun events to do in San Diego! In addition to so many other things happening this weekend- there is a very special and very spectacular event happening that you NEED to know about!

This global sailing championship will feature world’s top sailors, inaugural kiteboarding competition, and a four-day festival on San Diego Bay.

The eight-strong fleet – including two US-flagged wildcard squads – will race on San Diego Bay, a new venue for the Series, with thousands expected to witness the action from the public Race Village on Harbor Island from October 19-22.

The Extreme Sailing Series delivers high-performance action close to shore and attracts some of the world’s very best sailors racing GC32 hydro-foiling catamarans on short courses in venues around the globe.

The on-water action will be accompanied by numerous onshore entertainment options in the free-to-enter Race Village, located at Harbor Island Park. With scheduled activities that include a dedicated kids’ zone, a virtual reality GC32 experience and a variety of food and drink vendors, there is something for everyone.

Friday, Oct.20 will be Military Appreciation Day, when members of the armed forces are offered free admission for themselves and a guest to the VIP Foiling Club with a valid military ID.

Saturday, Oct. 21 is Family Day, with multiple STEM and educational programs, as well as dedicated activities for children.

The on-water Stadium Racing program will be complemented by the inaugural Extreme San Diego Kiteboarding Invitational, featuring some of the sport’s hottest talent battling for $20,000 in prize money. The impressive line-up includes three-time world champion Johnny Heineken and US Sailing’s 2017 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, Daniela Moroz.

I’m really excited to come to San Diego to race alongside some of the best sailors in the world. The last time I kited in San Diego Bay was on a race board during the America’s Cup World Series, and now I’ll be foil racing – we’ve come so far since then.

Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego will also serve as a presenting sponsor of the Kids’ Zone, which will feature a hands-on area where children, teens and adults can play and learn about health and wellness, as well as the services offered at Rady Children’s Hospital. Rady will also be the presenting sponsor for Family Day on Saturday Oct. 21.

US Sailing will provide additional activities for kids at the “US Sailing Education Zone” as part of its own STEM program and sport outreach. Through interactive and hands-on activities, children will have the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the sport of sailing.

The SEAL Family Foundation is the official charity of the Extreme Sailing Series San Diego Act and will sponsor Military Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 20. Members of the armed forces are offered free admission for themselves and a guest to the VIP Foiling tent with a valid military ID. The SEAL Family Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises funds and awareness for special programs in direct support of Naval Special Warfare (NSW) families on a local, national and global scale.

In addition to making this a can’t miss event, we strived to partner with companies and organizations who would help us achieve our broader goals. It was very important to us to use this platform to educate a broader audience, especially children, about the sport of sailing and to give back to our military community. We feel like we’re on the path to achieving those goals.
